If your counter is narrow but you cook for four, the air fryer that takes the least counter space for its capacity is the Ninja DoubleStack XL (SL401): 10 quarts in a body roughly 11 inches wide, because the two drawers sit on top of each other. The catch is height, about 15 inches, so if it has to live under upper cabinets, the Ninja Foodi DualZone DZ401 is the better fit at 12.8 inches tall, even though it is 17 inches wide.

## How we chose

This guide answers one question: how much room does an air fryer really take once it is out of the box? For each model we pulled width, depth and height from the manufacturer's spec sheet and the Amazon.com listing, cross-checked them, and worked out the footprint in square inches. Then we read verified owner reviews written after a few months of use, looking for complaints about bulk, handles that stick out, steam and drawers that are awkward to pull. We don't physically test the products; we work from published specs, owner's manuals, verified reviews and expert coverage from outlets such as Consumer Reports and TechGearLab.

We left out the models already covered in our guide on [how to choose an air fryer](https://picksdesk.com/en/home-kitchen/air-fryer-buying-guide) and in the sister guides on smaller sizes. Here we focus on family-size machines for three to five people, the ones that actually crowd a typical kitchen.

## Three shapes, three very different footprints

For the same capacity, shape matters more than quarts. A single basket grows in every direction, two side-by-side baskets grow wider, and two stacked drawers grow taller. The three models below represent each approach.

**Product: Ninja DoubleStack XL SL401 10-Quart 2-Basket Air Fryer** (Ninja) · Best for: For narrow counters and families of four
- Price band: Premium
- Specs: Capacity 10 qt; Baskets 2 stacked; Width 11.25 in; Depth 19.2 in; Height 15.1 in; Power 1690 W
- Key points: Two stacked drawers with racks: 4 cooking levels; About 11 in wide for 10 quarts; Smart Finish and Match Cook

The DoubleStack is Ninja's answer for people who want two baskets without giving up half the counter. At about 11 inches across it is narrower than plenty of single-basket 6-quart models, and its 10 quarts are split into two drawers that can run different programs. Each drawer has a removable rack, so you get four cooking levels in total.

**Pro**

- The smallest footprint per quart in this lineup, around 22 square inches per quart
- Two independent drawers with Smart Finish so both are ready at once
- Racks inside each drawer let you cook on two levels

**Da sapere / Caveats**

- About 15 inches tall: it won't clear many upper cabinets with any room left for steam
- Heavier than a single-basket model, not something you'll want to move every night
- More parts to wash: long-term owners say the racks and drawers fill half a dishwasher

**Who it's for:** families of four with a narrow counter and open space above, like an island or a spot by the window.

> The Amazon listing for the SL401 labels it 11.25" deep and 19.22" wide. Ninja's spec sheet and the European version of the same machine make clear those two numbers are swapped: the narrow side faces you.

**Product: Ninja Foodi DZ401 10-Quart DualZone XL 2-Basket Air Fryer** (Ninja) · Best for: For low upper cabinets
- Price band: Premium
- Specs: Capacity 10 qt; Baskets 2 side by side; Width 17.1 in; Depth 13.9 in; Height 12.8 in; Power 1690 W
- Key points: Two side-by-side 5-quart baskets; 12.8 in tall; Match Cook and Smart Finish

The DZ401 goes the other way: two 5-quart baskets side by side, 10 quarts in total. That makes it wide and squat, 17.1 inches across and 13.9 deep, but only 12.8 inches tall, low enough to work under most upper cabinets as long as you pull it forward while it runs.

**Pro**

- Low profile for a 10-quart dual-basket machine
- Two full 5-quart baskets, each big enough for a real side dish or a batch of wings
- Match Cook and Smart Finish make two-part dinners easy

**Da sapere / Caveats**

- At 17 inches wide it eats most of a standard counter run between the sink and the range
- The baskets are bulky to hand-wash in a small sink
- Draws up to 1,690 watts, so don't share a 15-amp circuit with the toaster or the kettle

**Who it's for:** households with low cabinets overhead and a wide stretch of open counter, who often cook a main and a side together.

**Product: Cosori Pro LE 5-Quart Air Fryer (CAF-L501)** (Cosori) · Best for: For couples and families of three
- Price band: Budget pick
- Specs: Capacity 5 qt; Baskets 1; Width 10.8 in; Depth 14.4 in; Height 12 in; Power 1500 W
- Key points: Single 5-quart basket; 10.8 in wide, 12 in tall; Shake reminder and 9 functions

The Cosori Pro LE is the single-basket compromise for smaller households: 10.8 inches wide, 12 inches tall and 14.4 inches deep including the handle (11.7 without it). At 5 quarts it is not a family-of-five machine, but it covers a couple or a family of three without taking over the counter.

**Pro**

- The smallest footprint here, about 155 square inches including the handle
- At 12 inches tall it clears almost any upper cabinet
- One basket that's easy to clean; owners often mention how quiet it runs

**Da sapere / Caveats**

- One compartment: no cooking two foods at different temperatures
- 5 quarts gets tight for four people and larger cuts like a whole chicken
- The handle adds almost 3 inches of depth that some listings leave out

**Who it's for:** couples and families of three who want one roomy basket without crowding a small kitchen.

## Air fryer dimensions compared: the footprint table

Raw inches are hard to read until you tie them to capacity. So we divided each footprint by the number of quarts: that tells you how much counter each quart actually costs.

| Model | Quarts | Width × depth | Footprint | Counter per quart | Height |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Ninja DoubleStack XL SL401 | 10 | 11.25 × 19.2 in | about 216 sq in | about 22 sq in | 15.1 in |
| Ninja Foodi DualZone DZ401 | 10 | 17.1 × 13.9 in | about 238 sq in | about 24 sq in | 12.8 in |
| Cosori Pro LE | 5 | 10.8 × 14.4 in | about 155 sq in | about 31 sq in | 12 in |

The pattern is clear. The stacked design wins on counter space and loses on height. The side-by-side is the most counter-hungry of the two 10-quart machines but stays low. The 5-quart single basket takes the least space overall yet the most per quart, which is the trade-off of every smaller fryer. If you only cook for one or two, the picks in our [small air fryer](https://picksdesk.com/en/home-kitchen/small-air-fryer-one-two-people) guide go even smaller.

## The space spec sheets leave out

Listed dimensions describe the machine switched off. Once it's running, an air fryer needs extra room in three directions.

**Behind and to the sides.** Hot air exhausts through the rear vents. Philips manuals ask for at least 10 cm, about 4 inches, of clearance behind, on both sides and above; some Ninja manuals call for 6 inches. A tiled backsplash can take it. A plastic canister or a roll of paper towels can't.

**Above.** Many models vent steam from the top or the upper back. Under wood or laminate cabinets, repeated steam swells the edges and lifts the finish, which is the most common complaint in six-month reviews. If cabinet clearance is your main constraint, our [low profile air fryer](https://picksdesk.com/en/home-kitchen/low-profile-air-fryer-under-cabinets) guide ranks the flattest models.

**In front.** This is the inch everyone forgets. The drawer slides almost all the way out, so you need clear space in front that's close to the basket's depth. On a standard 25-inch-deep counter, with the fryer pushed against the backsplash, the open drawer reaches the edge or hangs past it. Not a problem in itself, but worth knowing before you tuck it next to the fridge.

## How to measure your counter in two minutes

Grab a tape measure. Measure the open width between fixed obstacles (sink, range, wall) and subtract 8 inches, 4 per side. Measure from the backsplash to the counter edge: in most US kitchens it's about 25 inches, and a fryer deeper than about 18 leaves little room for the drawer. Finally, measure up to the bottom of the upper cabinets and subtract 4 inches for steam.

With those three numbers the choice mostly makes itself. Plenty of height but a narrow counter points to a stacked design; less than about 16 inches of usable height points to a side-by-side or a low single basket; tight in every direction means dropping a size. To figure out how many quarts your household really needs, the people-to-capacity table is in our guide on [which air fryer to buy](https://picksdesk.com/en/home-kitchen/air-fryer-buying-guide).

> Cut a piece of cardboard to the width and depth of the model you're eyeing and leave it on the counter for a day. You'll know right away whether it steals your chopping space.

## The mistakes that send air fryers back

The first is trusting the photo. Product shots show air fryers in huge kitchens, where a 15-inch-tall machine looks tiny next to a French-door fridge. The second is mixing up the numbers: some listings swap width and depth or give the box size. The safest check is the spec sheet on the manufacturer's site. The third is forgetting the handle, which on single-basket models adds a few inches of depth beyond the body.

There's also a mistake of perspective. Plenty of people buy the biggest fryer the counter can hold, then use it for two servings of fries. A half-full basket cooks just fine, but the machine takes up that space every single day.

## When it makes sense to buy, and when to skip it

Swapping air fryers for space reasons makes sense when your current one lives in the pantry and you dread hauling it out: a fryer that stays on the counter gets used. Skip the stacked design if your cabinets sit less than about 20 inches above the counter, and skip the side-by-side if you have under 2 feet of open counter. If none of the three shapes fits, the model isn't the problem; capacity is, so step down to 4 quarts. These machines often show up during [October Prime Day](https://picksdesk.com/en/deals/prime-big-deal-days), but the dimensions stay the same whatever the price.

## Our verdict

**Narrow counter, family of four, nothing overhead:** Ninja DoubleStack XL SL401, the dual-drawer machine that uses the least counter per quart.

**Low cabinets and a wide stretch of counter:** Ninja Foodi DualZone DZ401, 12.8 inches tall with two full 5-quart baskets.

**Couple or family of three who want one basket:** Cosori Pro LE, the smallest and lowest of the three.

## FAQ

**How much clearance does an air fryer need?**

More than the listed dimensions suggest. Philips manuals ask for at least 10 cm, about 4 inches, behind, on both sides and above; some Ninja manuals call for 6 inches. You also need room in front to pull the drawer all the way out.

**Is there a space-saving air fryer for a family of four?**

On the counter, yes: stacked dual-drawer models like the Ninja DoubleStack XL fit 10 quarts into about 11 inches of width. They are tall, though, so you need roughly 20 inches of clear space above the counter.

**Do Amazon air fryer dimensions include the handle?**

It depends on the listing. The Amazon listing for the Cosori Pro LE, for example, gives its depth both with and without the handle, while other listings swap width and depth. For exact numbers, check the spec sheet on the manufacturer's site.

**Side-by-side or stacked dual basket: which is better for a small kitchen?**

Stacked if counter width is the problem and there's room above; side-by-side if low upper cabinets are the limit. With both a short counter and low cabinets, a single 5- or 6-quart basket is the safer choice.

**Can I run my air fryer under the kitchen cabinets?**

It's better not to. Steam from the vent can swell and peel wood or laminate cabinet edges over time. Pull the fryer forward while it runs and slide it back once it has cooled down.
