Which dehumidifier should you buy? Four questions

For an ordinary apartment with wet windows in the morning and laundry drying indoors, the answer is the Pro Breeze 20 L/day: up to 35 m² and the largest tank of the group. How we chose the questions

We weighed four things, in the order in which they matter at home. Rated litres per day, which manufacturers measure at 30 °C and 80% relative humidity and which a flat at 18 degrees will never match: it places a unit in the right class, it does not promise a result. Tank size, because a machine that stops at midday while you are out is not drying anything, and the continuous drain hose, which is the only sensible answer when the damp lasts all winter. The noise figure published by the maker, which decides whether the unit can live in a bedroom or has to sit in the hall. And the filter: all four have washable mesh, two add activated carbon against that shut-up smell, and one adds a HEPA stage. We left out desiccant salt boxes and mini Peltier units: they collect a glass of water in a wardrobe, they do not dry a room.

Frequently asked questions

How many litres a day does an apartment need?

For 70-90 m² with one or two problem areas, 16 to 20 rated litres a day is the right class. Below 12 litres you are covering a single room.

Can it run all night in a bedroom?

Only if the maker publishes a noise figure and it stays under 40 dBA. Above that, in a quiet house, you hear the compressor cycling on and off.

Do I need a continuous drain or is the tank enough?

The tank is fine if the unit runs a few hours a day. If the damp lasts all winter, a hose to a drain is the only way to avoid emptying it twice a day.
