Which electric kettle should you buy? Three questions
This tool scores the European models from our Italian and Spanish editions (230 V). If you shop on Amazon.com, the short answer from our US guide is the Cuisinart PerfecTemp CPK-17P1 for most households, the Hamilton Beach 40880 if you only need to boil water on a budget, and the Cosori Gooseneck for pour-over coffee. The questions below explain the logic behind each pick.

How we chose the questions
Three questions really separate kettles. The first is how many people use it, because capacity decides how much water you heat each time, and so time and energy: one liter is enough for one or two people, three or more need 1.5 to 1.7 liters. The second is what you make. Black tea, herbal tea and pasta water only need a boil, and any kettle with a decent element will do; green tea, white tea and pour-over coffee are better below boiling, and that's where temperature control changes what ends up in the cup. The third is what matters most on your countertop: simplicity and durability, a small footprint, or something you'll leave on display. Budget is a hard filter based on market price tiers, not daily prices. When scores tie, we favor stainless steel where it touches the water and a removable scale filter.
How the score works
Each answer gives 2 points to the product that is ideal for that profile, 1 to an acceptable one and 0 to one that does not cover it. Budget is eliminatory: anything above it is out. Ties go to the guide's order. Amazon links are affiliate links, but the result does not depend on the commission.
Frequently asked questions
Do I really need a variable temperature kettle?
Only if you often drink green or white tea or make pour-over. For black tea, herbal tea and pasta, boiling is all you need.
Is one liter enough, or should I get 1.7?
One liter for one or two people; 1.5 to 1.7 liters for three or more, or if you heat pasta water.
