Which school backpack should you buy? Four questions

For most middle-schoolers the sensible answer is the satch pack, the only one here that adjusts as its owner grows. In elementary school the deuter Ypsilon makes more sense, hip belt included. And if books stay in a locker, a 380-gram Eastpak Padded Pak'r is plenty.

How we chose the questions

The four questions isolate the only variables that actually change the answer.

School stage decides size: a 38-litre pack on an eight-year-old's back rises above the shoulders and drops below the waist, and padding never fixes wrong proportions. Daily load decides structure: under three kilos a soft pack is fine, past four a hip belt that moves weight onto the pelvis changes the walk to school.

The third question forces the trade-off into the open. Comfort, capacity and low weight pull in different directions, and no pack wins all three. The satch pack has the best carry system here and weighs 1.2 kg empty; the Padded Pak'r weighs 380 grams and offers neither a hip belt nor a laptop sleeve.

Budget comes last because it is the bluntest filter: below the entry tier only sports packs survive, while the top bracket buys an adjustable system meant to last five school years.

Frequently asked questions

How many litres for middle school?

Between 24 and 30 litres. Below 24 full-size textbooks go in at an angle; above 30 the pack fills past what the day needs and the weight climbs for nothing.

Is a hip belt actually useful?

Past about four kilos, yes: it moves part of the load off the shoulders and onto the pelvis. Under three kilos it is a buckle that dangles, which is why removable ones get removed.

Is it worth spending over a hundred on a school pack?

Only when the pack has to last several years and its owner is still growing: the adjustable back length is the feature that justifies the money. For a final year of high school it is not worth it.
