  12. Our verdict

Month one, you cook everything in it. Month two it is chips on Tuesday, chicken thighs on Thursday, and the only number that still matters is whether dinner for two fits in a single layer. That lands most couples between 3.5 and 4 litres, in a machine small enough to leave out on the counter.

How many litres two people actually need

The figure on the box is the volume of an empty basket, not the food it holds. A 3.8 litre drawer takes roughly 600 to 700 grams of raw chips, which is dinner for two hungry adults. Philips rates its 4.1 litre model at 0.8 kg of food. The gap between 3.8 and 4.1 litres never shows up on the plate. The gap between 1.6 and 3.8 shows up on night one.

How you cook matters just as much. These baskets work when food sits in one layer, and two stacked rows of wings come out pale in any machine, cheap or expensive. Anyone who roasts bulky vegetables, aubergine slices or halved peppers, will feel cramped under 3.5 litres even cooking alone.

Basket sizeWho it suitsWhat fits in one layer
1.5-2 L (1.6-2 qt)One person, or a side dish for two300-400 g of chips, two fish fillets
3-4 L (3-4 qt)Two people, daily cooking600-700 g of chips, half a chicken in pieces
4-5 L (4-5 qt)Two who have friends overSide and main in two back to back runs
5.5 L and upThree or four peopleA different class of machine entirely

Past five litres the shortlist changes and so does the price bracket. Those models sit in our air fryer buying guide for families, where the real argument is one big drawer against two smaller ones.

Measure the worktop, then the machine

Buyers check the width and forget the hot air leaving the back. Most manuals ask for around 10 cm of clear space behind and above. Handles matter too: the Cosori body is 27 cm deep, but 37.5 cm once you count the handle and the plug, which eats most of a standard 60 cm counter.

Height under the wall cabinet is the measurement nobody takes. A 35 cm machine under a cabinet that starts at 40 cm means pulling the drawer out at an angle every night, and by week six it lives in a cupboard.

ModelCounter footprintHeightWeight
Ninja AF100 3.8 L34 x 28 cm (13.4 x 11 in)35 cm (13.8 in)4.4 kg
Philips Essential 4.1 L36 x 26.4 cm (14.2 x 10.4 in)29.5 cm (11.6 in)4.5 kg
COSORI Lite 3.8 L27 x 27 cm (37.5 cm with handle)32.5 cm (12.8 in)4.5 kg
Moulinex EZ3018 1.6 L29.6 x 20.5 cm (11.7 x 8.1 in)20.5 cm (8.1 in)2.7 kg

Use a sheet of A4 or letter paper as a ruler. If it does not sit comfortably upright on your free counter space, only the Moulinex will stop competing with the dish rack.

Four small models that hold up day to day

These four were shortlisted from highly rated European listings with large review counts, cross checked against manufacturer spec sheets and published reviews. Model codes differ by region, so the links here run a product search rather than point at one fixed listing. None of them is built to feed four.

Ninja AF100: the hottest air of the four

On paper it is the aggressive one. Fifteen hundred and fifty watts, a 3.8 litre drawer, a stated range of 40 to 210 degrees Celsius. Those extra ten degrees over most rivals earn their keep on frozen chips, which is what actually goes in an air fryer once the novelty passes. Four functions: air fry, roast, reheat, dehydrate. The dehydrate setting is worth exactly one curiosity run, since a tray of apple slices takes most of a night. Basket and crisper plate are dishwasher safe. The catch is size, at 35 cm tall, plus a fan you notice in a studio flat.

Philips Essential HD9200: two controls and nothing to install

Fourteen hundred watts, a 4.1 litre pan rated by Philips at 0.8 kg of food, 200 degrees at the top. No presets to learn, no app to sign up for: set time, set temperature, wait for the light. For a first flat, or as a gift to a parent, that reads as a feature rather than a compromise. Cool touch housing, auto shut off, dishwasher safe parts. The complaint that repeats in verified reviews concerns the drawer, which needs a firm push to seat properly in the early months.

Pros

  • Usable without opening the manual
  • 4.1 litres in a 29.5 cm tall body
  • Basket and grid go in the dishwasher
  • Housing stays cool to the touch
  • Shuts itself off at the end of the timer

Worth knowing

  • Stops at 200 degrees, ten below the Ninja
  • No presets, so timings are on you
  • Drawer needs a deliberate shove to close

COSORI Lite CAF-LI401S: the one that texts you

Fifteen hundred watts, 3.8 litres, 75 to 230 degrees, a timer that runs from one to sixty minutes. Seven presets and the VeSync app, which most owners use enthusiastically for a week and then ignore. The narrow body is the real argument, 27 cm on each side. Published reviews call it very quiet and easy to clean, with two fair criticisms: homemade chips come out less convincing than frozen ones, and several app recipes are odd. Basket and crisper plate are nonstick aluminium, both dishwasher safe.

Budget for 37.5 cm of depth, not 27, once the handle and plug are counted. That difference decides whether it fits beside the sink.

Moulinex EZ3018: 1.6 litres for a kitchen with no spare counter

A thousand and thirty watts, a 1.6 litre basket, two stated portions, six presets and a touchscreen. It occupies 29.6 by 20.5 cm and weighs 2.7 kg, light enough to live in a cupboard and come out when needed. Right for a studio or an office kitchen, wrong for two people who cook every night, because 1.6 litres is a side dish rather than a meal. Whole chicken is off the table. Four wings at a time come out beautifully.

Cooking while somebody studies in the same room turns fan noise into a real problem, which is the same reason we put together a guide to noise cancelling headphones for study and focus. September brings that question more than any other.

What it costs to switch on every evening

The arithmetic is quick, and it explains why a small air fryer earns its place. Assume the machines draw full power for the whole cycle, which overstates reality since the element switches on and off, and price electricity at the rough US residential average of 17 cents per kilowatt hour.

AppliancePowerTypical cycleEnergyTheoretical cost
Moulinex EZ30181030 W20 minutes0.34 kWhabout 6 cents
Ninja AF100 / COSORI Lite1500-1550 W20 minutes0.50 kWhabout 9 cents
Philips Essential1400 W25 minutes0.58 kWhabout 10 cents
Electric ovenaround 1000 W average60 minutes including preheatabout 1 kWhabout 17 cents

The saving is in minutes, not watts. An oven wants fifteen of them just to reach temperature; these want two or three. Cook four evenings a week and that is a working hour back every month.

When to buy

Compact models track the same discount calendar as every other kitchen appliance: they tend to dip during the October Prime event and again around Black Friday, then drift back up in January. September holds firm, because demand runs high with people moving into new flats. If your kitchen has managed without one for a year, four more weeks cost nothing. If you moved in last week, buy now and stop reading.

Do not buy one if...

Three or more of you sit down to eat. Anything under four litres forces two rounds, and the first round arrives lukewarm. Start instead from the guide to larger air fryers.

Sunday means a whole roast chicken. None of these four will take one; that needs six litres of basket at minimum, or a countertop convection oven.

You want one machine that also proves dough, browns a wide tray or bakes a round pizza. A small drawer fryer will not do it, and a mini oven at a similar price has the rectangular cavity you need.

Mistakes that show up in month one

  1. Filling the basket to the rim. Air has to move around the food, so past two thirds full you either shake halfway through or accept pale results.
  2. Lining the whole base with parchment. It blocks the holes, stretches cooking times, and during preheat a loose sheet can fly into the element. A small piece weighted down by the food is fine.
  3. Skipping the two or three minute preheat. Frozen chips give it away immediately: soft outside, cooked through.
  4. Running the basket through the dishwasher with harsh tablets. The coating lasts, but not forever, and owners who wash by hand with a soft sponge report three good years.
  5. Cooking fish and forgetting about it. A shallow layer of water and vinegar in the outer drawer, five minutes at 200 degrees, and the smell is gone.

Frequently asked questions

How many litres do two people need?
Three to four litres. That size takes 600 to 700 grams of raw chips in one layer, which is a full dinner for two. Below 2 litres you cook one side dish at a time.
Can you use parchment paper in the basket?
Yes, but only a small piece held down by the food, and never during preheating, since the fan can lift it into the element. Lining the whole base blocks the holes and stretches cooking times.
Does an air fryer need preheating?
Two or three minutes is enough. With frozen food the difference is obvious on the first try; with slow roasted vegetables it barely matters.
How do you get the fish smell out of the basket?
A shallow layer of water with a splash of vinegar in the outer drawer, five minutes at 200 degrees. Manufacturers repeat that trick in their own FAQs, and it works after curry too.
Is the basket dishwasher safe?
On all four of these models the basket and crisper plate are listed as dishwasher safe. Harsh tablets dull the coating over time, and owners who hand wash with a soft sponge report three solid years.
Will a whole chicken fit in a 3.8 litre basket?
No. A 1.2 kg bird only just fits in baskets of six litres and up. Half a chicken in pieces, on the other hand, sits comfortably in 3.8 litres.
Can you put aluminium foil inside?
Better not. It covers the basket holes, moves around in the airflow and marks some coatings. If you need a container, a rigid tin sized for the basket is the safer option.
