Instant Vortex Mini 2-quart: for one person and no counter

The 2-quart Vortex Mini is the smallest basket we would still call useful: one real portion of fries, two fish fillets or four wings in a single layer. It runs from a touch panel, has four programs, and the basket and tray go in the dishwasher. A 4-quart basket in a body about 10.5 inches wide, which makes it the slimmest 4-quart model here. It offers seven functions, a stated top temperature of 450°F and the VeSync app for remote start. Small air fryer dimensions: the real footprint on the counter

The classic mistake is to read the width and forget the hot air that leaves through the back: almost every manual asks for about 4 inches of clearance behind and above the unit. Then there is the handle, which never appears on the spec sheet and adds several inches of depth on every basket model. A sheet of letter paper is a good ruler: if it does not sit comfortably on your counter in portrait, only the Vortex Mini will fit without a fight with the dish rack. If the counter is already taken by a bean to cup machine, measure what is left before choosing a capacity.

Under the cabinet: which one fits

The measurement that always slips is the height under the upper cabinet. A tall fryer under a cabinet that starts at 16 inches forces you to pull the basket out at an angle every evening, and it ends up unused. Air fryer for one person: how many quarts

A 2-quart basket brings one real portion of fries, two fish fillets or four wings to the table. For someone who eats alone three or four nights a week it is enough. Below 2 quarts, food has to sit in a single layer; stack it and it comes out pale on any machine here. The limit shows as soon as the menu changes: sliced eggplant, whole peppers or a tray to reheat ask for surface, not quarts. If you often cook that kind of thing, even alone, a 4-quart basket is the better buy and the extra inches are worth it.

Watts, outlets and noise in a small kitchen

All three run on a standard 120 V outlet and draw between roughly 1300 and 1550 watts, which is fine on its own circuit and a problem on the same strip as a microwave or a space heater. Run one high-draw appliance at a time and the breaker stays quiet. A typical 20-minute cycle uses about half a kilowatt-hour at full draw, and less in practice because the heating element cycles on and off; at the national average of around 17 cents per kWh reported by the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the cost per meal is small change. Noise is the other thing spec sheets skip: every basket fryer here sounds like a range hood on medium, which is nothing in a house and noticeable in a studio while a movie is on.

When it makes sense and when to skip it

It makes sense if you cook for one or two, if you turn the oven on mostly for small portions and if you have at least 14 inches of free counter width. The gain over the oven is minutes more than electricity: a 120 V oven takes a quarter of an hour to reach temperature, a compact fryer takes two or three. Skip it if three or more people sit at your table, because any basket under 4 quarts means two batches and the first one arrives lukewarm. Skip it if Sunday dinner is a whole chicken, which needs at least 6 quarts. And skip it if you need a rectangular cavity for sheet pans and pizza: that is a toaster oven's job.
