Which coffee machine should you buy? Four questions
For most two or three person households the answer is a mid-range bean-to-cup machine with steel burrs. Drink one coffee a day in a small kitchen and a capsule machine is the honest choice. Make cappuccino every morning and you want a milk carafe that rinses in seconds.

How we chose the questions
The four questions come from how these machines get used, not from how they get sold. The first is about the drink: if you only ever pull espresso you don't need a milk system, and that single component moves the price by hundreds.
The second asks how much you want to do yourself. A portafilter machine wants a dose, a tamp and a grind you'll correct over the first week; a bean-to-cup does it all and makes the decisions for you. Neither answer is wrong. The right one is whatever you'll still be doing in six months.
The third, counter space, rules out more models than anything else. A 43 cm machine fits under a standard wall unit, but you can't fill the hopper without pulling it forward every time.
Budget comes last and works as a ceiling rather than a wish. If a machine sits outside the band you pick, we don't suggest it, even when it would be the better buy.
How the score works
Each answer gives 2 points to the product that is ideal for that profile, 1 to an acceptable one and 0 to one that does not cover it. Budget is eliminatory: anything above it is out. Ties go to the guide's order. Amazon links are affiliate links, but the result does not depend on the commission.
Frequently asked questions
Can a capsule machine make cappuccino?
Only with a separate frother, which is cheap but takes up counter space. The most compact models, the Essenza Mini included, have no milk system on board at all.
How long does a built-in grinder last?
Philips quotes around 20,000 cups for its ceramic burrs; steel burrs wear faster but give a fuller cup. Either way you're talking years of home use.
Is a portafilter machine worth it without a grinder?
Not really. Pressurised baskets build crema even from a poor grind, so the cup ends up close to a capsule's and the extra work buys you little.
