Which noise cancelling headphones or earbuds should you buy? 4 questions

Studying in a library or a noisy flat does not require the best cancelling money can buy: it requires something you can wear for four hours, with a battery that survives the week. For most students the answer is the Soundcore Space Q45; on the tightest budget it is the Sony WH-CH720N, and anyone who wants silence on a train pays for the Sony WH-1000XM5. If the pair has to live in a pocket instead, the argument changes and we move to earbuds.

How we chose the questions

The first question is shape, because it drives everything else. A closed cup adds passive isolation on top of the electronics and sits on your head for hours without pressing into the ear canal; an earbud seals the canal, lives in a pocket, and gives you eight hours rather than forty. Someone at a desk all day and someone on public transport all day are not buying the same object.

The second question asks what you refuse to give up. Across these seven models that is where the real differences sit: the Sony 1000X pairs isolate better than anything else here, Soundcore, Sennheiser and JBL run 44 to 50 hours against the WH-1000XM5's 30, the Sennheiser sounds best in its bracket, and the WH-CH720N and Liberty 4 NC cost roughly half of the rest.

Main use shifts the weights: in a library long-session comfort decides it, on a commute cancelling and bulk do, and on video calls the microphones do — which is where earbuds start ahead, sitting centimetres from your mouth. Budget is eliminative and uses the market price bands from our guides, not whatever Amazon charges this morning.

How the score works

Each answer gives 2 points to the product that is ideal for that profile, 1 to an acceptable one and 0 to one that does not cover it. Budget is eliminatory: anything above it is out. Ties go to the guide's order. Amazon links are affiliate links, but the result does not depend on the commission.

Frequently asked questions

Does noise cancelling actually help you study?

It works on steady noise: ventilation, traffic, the rumble of a train. Against nearby voices it does far less, because speech lives in the mid and upper range. There a closed cup with some background music does most of the job.

Over-ear or earbuds for long sessions?

Over-ear: past three hours your ears will thank you, the battery lasts five times longer, and the passive isolation of a cup adds to the active kind. Earbuds stay right if you are constantly on the move.

What does multipoint mean?

The headphones stay connected to two devices at once, so you follow a lecture on the laptop and take a call on the phone without re-pairing. Every model in this tool does it, though on the Liberty 4 NC switching it on disables LDAC.
