How we chose the questions

These four questions are the ones that, in six-month reviews, separate people who keep using their robot from people who leave it in a cupboard.

The first is about pets, because hair is the real test: not so much for suction as for the brushes, which without an anti-tangle system need freeing by hand every week. The second is about mopping, where the market trades on ambiguity: a dragged pad maintains, twin discs rinsed at the dock actually wash.

The third question matters as much as the first two: how much you want to be involved. A dock that empties the bin turns a weekly chore into a monthly one, and half of long-term satisfaction is decided right there. Budget we treat as a hard filter: below a certain figure some features simply do not exist, and we would rather say so than recommend something out of reach.

How the score works

Each answer gives 2 points to the product that is ideal for that profile, 1 to an acceptable one and 0 to one that does not cover it. Budget is eliminatory: anything above it is out. Ties go to the guide's order. Amazon links are affiliate links, but the result does not depend on the commission.

Frequently asked questions

Is a self-emptying dock worth it?

It pays off most for allergy sufferers and pet owners, because it avoids the dust cloud at every emptying. A 4-litre bag turns a weekly chore into a monthly one. In exchange it takes floor space and adds the cost of bags.

What height do I need to fit under the sofa?

Measure the clearance and subtract half a centimetre for safety. The models here run from 9.5 to 10.4 cm, so a sofa with 10 cm of clearance takes the first three but not the fourth.

Does a mopping robot handle rugs as well?

On short-pile rugs yes, raising suction when it detects them and lifting the pads 9-10 mm on docked models. On deep-pile rugs none of these robots gives a satisfying result; that is stick-vacuum territory.
